A new year for SELBYHAMRADIO.COM as we enter 2012, and so far it has been quite memorable with some great contacts into the US from our favourite location. On the equipment front Anton & Dave have both purchased FT450 radios from Yaesu. The FT450 is an amazing radio, I raved about the Icom 2820 but the FT450 is simplicity in action with a great channel display, loads of features, and APRS which works very effectively indeed. Yaesu are bringing out digital radio but we cannot get that excited, Icom brought out DSTAR, which we still use, yet from what we hear Yaesu have taken Motorola's business digital radio and put in a ham radio. Secondly is not compatible with DSTAR which we think is crazy. We also have added a VX8 to our armoury of radio gear.
From our very high location on 20m we spoke to Hal NE2Q and amused all the listeners it would appear, as Hal lectured us UK foundation holders on the merits of DX wax. "Helps the electrons flow better old man." He directed us to his site where he sells wax for high performance cars. On a serious note Hal suggested a reflector to place behind our vehicle and in a recent email to yours truly he is currently taking a look at it with some nifty design software, we shall publish the results on this page. Some of the other hams listening later commented on how entertaining the whole conversation was. We look forward to adapting Hal's idea it will make an interesting article. We have uploaded some fascinating clips to our You Tube channel, we hope this is the year we pass our 2EO and move on for our advanced licences. Over and out.
